I once saw a cook the ( late Sara Riaz) prepare very delicious looking rose shaped sweet bread on a TV show. I was totally impressed by the idea and eagerly committed to give it a try. Since I am not a big fan of sweet bread, it had to be something savory.
That's when the idea of a pizza rose struck my imagination. These not only look beautiful when displayed on a serving dish but are infinitely awesome in taste. The best part about this recipe is that you can practically use any vegetarian or meat filling you like.
However, I keep myself to the basic filling of pizza sauce and mozzarella. These roses are very easy to make. For the dough, you can follow my pizza from scratch recipe.(smiling face pizza)
These can be great for children's lunch box ideas, served for Hi tea or even as a pretty looking side dish.
Preparation: 30-40min
Yields: 12 roses
Category: vegetarian, snack, hi tea
Ingredients | Quantity |
pizza dough | 300g |
pizza sauce | 100g |
mozzarella | 100g |
butter melted | 5 tbsp |
egg wash | 1 egg beaten +2tbsp milk |
Method:
For a quick pizza dough recap, place 1tsp yeast with 1/2 cup water and 1tsp sugar to activate in a warm place. Take 300g flour in a mixing bowl add the yeast mixture followed by 1tsp salt and 1tbsp olive oil. Cover and leave to rest in a warm place for 3-4hrs till double in size.
Divide the dough into twelve small balls. Roll out each ball in the form of a 10cm diameter circle. Make four slits along the sides being careful not to cut right through the center.
Spread some melted butter in the center followed by pizza sauce or filling of your choice.
Cover with a generous amount of mozzarella.
Take one section, lift it up to cover one side of the filling.
Pick up the opposite side and overlap it on the part that has already been folded. Stick the two parts with the help of an egg wash.
Repeat the same process with the other two sides so that you form a complete rose. Seal each petal with the egg wash.
I like to place a dollop of pizza sauce right in the center to make it even prettier. Leave to rest for half an hour before baking.
Place the prepared roses on top of a greased tray and bake in a preheated oven at 180 C till light golden.
Serve with ketchup or dip of your choice. This is my favorite tea time snack. What is your favorite?
